Privacy Policy
Short version: You can use Tonight without an account. If you make an account (any email works), we store that email, the name and @username you choose, your friends and what you post. Only students who verify a school email can post. We don't track your location, we don't show ads, and we don't sell or share your data for advertising. You can delete your account and everything tied to it from inside the app.
Who we are
Tonight is an independent student project that lists what's happening around the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, Florida State University, Florida A&M University, the University of South Florida, the University of Tampa, the University of North Florida, Jacksonville University, the University of West Florida, Florida Atlantic University, the University of Miami, the University of Georgia and Georgia Southern University. It is not run by or affiliated with any of those universities. Questions go to teamtonightu@gmail.com.
What we collect and why
| Anonymous ID | When you open Tonight, our backend creates a random anonymous account ID for your device. It stores your “I'm going” taps, crowd/line/cover reports, votes and reports so they count once and can be rate-limited. It is not linked to your name or email. |
|---|---|
| Only if you make an account. Any email can make one, to add friends, share plans and get an invite link. We use it to send your sign-in link or code. If you want to post, you also confirm a school email, which we use to verify you're a student at a supported school (UF, Santa Fe College, UCF, FSU, Tallahassee State College, FAMU, USF, the University of Tampa, UNF, Jacksonville University, UWF, FAU, the University of Miami, UGA or Georgia Southern, plus partner transfer colleges: Valencia College, Seminole State College, Hillsborough College, St. Petersburg College, Palm Beach State College, Broward College, Miami Dade College, Pensacola State College, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the University of North Georgia and Ogeechee Technical College) and to send your sign-in link or code. Your school name, not your email, shows on your posts. | |
| Display name | The name and @username you choose. They appear to your friends and people who search for you, and on your flyers, comments and photos. |
| What you post | Flyers (title, place, time, notes), comments, photos and captions, and names you type into a group vote (“What's the move?”). These are public to anyone using Tonight. |
| Photos | Before upload, the app shrinks your photo and re-encodes it, which removes location and camera data. It is also checked on your phone by an open-source nudity filter. After upload it may be checked by an automated moderation service (see “Who processes data”) and by our moderators before it's shown. |
| Invites and sharing | If you're a signed-in student, you get a personal invite link. We store which account a link belongs to and, when someone signs up from it, that they joined through your link (so you can see your progress and connect in one tap). When you share an event or an invite, or someone opens a shared link, we count it (which link or event, and a random ID for the device or your account ID) so we can see whether sharing works. Shared event pages show the event only, never who is going. |
| Your plans | When you tap "I'm going", that tap is saved. Friends see it only if you choose "Friends" under Friends → Who sees the plans you share; choose "Just me" and nobody else does. Other people only ever see totals. |
| Reports and blocks | When you report content or block someone, we store what you reported or who you blocked, so moderators can act and so blocked people's content stays hidden from you. |
| On your device | The app saves your settings (campus, colour theme, sound), your sign-in session, and things you've joined or hidden, on your phone. This stays on the device. |
We do not collect your location, contacts, phone number, advertising ID, health or financial information. The iPhone app contains no analytics or advertising code.
Who processes data for us
- Supabase — hosts our database, sign-in, photo storage and server functions.
- Email delivery — sign-in emails are sent through our email provider (currently Google Gmail).
- Photo moderation — if enabled, uploaded photos are sent to an automated moderation service (OpenAI's moderation API or Sightengine) only to check them for nudity, violence or hate. They are not used for advertising.
- Content delivery — fonts are loaded from Google Fonts and some code (including the on-device photo filter) from the jsDelivr CDN. Like any website, these servers see your IP address when your device downloads the files.
- Get a ride — when you tap "Get a ride", the venue's name (never your location or account) is looked up on OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to find its address. Uber, Lyft or your maps app then open with that address filled in; what you do there is covered by their own privacy policies.
- Website only — tonightoncampus.com is hosted by Netlify and uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without identifying you. The iPhone app does not use it.
We don't sell your personal information and we don't share it with anyone for advertising or tracking.
How long we keep it
- Flyers and student posts: removed about two days after the event ends.
- Crowd/line/cover reports and group votes: removed after about a day.
- Comments and photos: removed after about 30 days, or sooner if they're rejected or reported.
- Anonymous IDs that haven't done anything: removed after about 30 days of inactivity.
- Your account and profile: until you delete them.
Deleting your data
In the app, open Account (top of the screen or the link at the bottom) and tap Delete my account and data. This deletes your login and, with it, your posts, comments, photos, going list, reports, votes and blocks. It can't be undone. You can also email teamtonightu@gmail.com and we'll delete it for you, or tell you what we hold about you.
Safety and moderation
Everyone can report a flyer, comment or photo with the ⚑ Report button (choosing a reason) and block another user. Anything reported by 3 different people is taken down automatically. Reports go to our moderators, who review them within 24 hours and remove content or accounts that break the Community Rules.
Age
Tonight is made for college students and is intended for people 17 and older. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
