How UF students find things to do in Gainesville tonight, from free downtown concerts and campus events to Midtown bars, food deals and game nights.

TONIGHT blog cover: Things to Do in Gainesville Tonight

It's 7 PM, the group chat is asking "what's the move?" and nobody has an answer. Gainesville has more going on than most people realize: free shows downtown, campus concerts, trivia, game nights, cheap food and a Midtown bar strip that runs most nights of the week. The hard part is knowing what's actually happening tonight.

This guide covers the main places UF students go and how to find out what's on before you leave.

How to find out what's on tonight

The fastest way is to open the TONIGHT UF wall. It's a live board of what's happening around campus and Gainesville. Every event has its time, place and cover (when there is one), plus a link back to the venue's or university's own listing, so you can check it yourself. You can filter by mood ("go out", "meet people", "eat something"), by time of night, or by free events only.

If you'd rather check sources one by one, these are the ones TONIGHT pulls from:

  • UF's own calendars: the Career Connections Center's events page, UF Performing Arts and the College of the Arts list campus events with exact times.
  • City of Gainesville events: the city's events directory covers Bo Diddley Plaza downtown.
  • Venue pages and ticketing: Heartwood Soundstage, Swamp Head Brewery and bar ticketing pages like LineLeap and Bizzy post their weekly nights.

Free things to do in Gainesville

You don't need a budget for a good night in Gainesville.

Downtown at Bo Diddley Plaza

Bo Diddley Plaza is the city's outdoor stage in the middle of downtown. Its Free Fridays concert series has local and regional bands on Friday nights; the city calls it the region's longest-running free outdoor concert series. The plaza also hosts free yoga and community dance nights through the week, on the city's events calendar.

Live music without a ticket

Heartwood Soundstage, on South Main Street, runs Free Porch Sessions: a weekly acoustic song circle on its porch, open to any skill level. On other nights it books ticketed shows, from local bands to touring acts.

Campus events

Check UF's own calendars before you assume a weeknight is dead. UF Performing Arts and the School of Music put on concerts and recitals, and many student recitals are free. The Career Connections Center also runs evening panels and workshops with employers, which is a low-key way to meet people in your field.

Nightlife: Midtown and downtown

Most of the bar scene near UF is on Midtown, the strip along University Avenue across from campus. Each bar has its own weekly theme nights, and TONIGHT lists them as they're posted:

  • Macdintons, The Grove, Fats and Rowdy's run nights through the week, like karaoke, NFL Monday watch parties and midweek "bounce" nights, usually until 2 AM.
  • Salty Dog Saloon is a Midtown sports bar with weekly specials.

Covers and entry ages vary by bar and by night. Some nights are 18+ to enter and 21+ to drink, others are 21+ only. Each listing on TONIGHT shows the cover when the venue posts one, and links to the source. For more, read The Ultimate UF Nightlife Guide.

Low-key nights: trivia, breweries and game stores

Not every night needs to be a bar night.

  • Swamp Head Brewery in southwest Gainesville runs a weekly trivia night, plus events like open mic nights and free yoga.
  • Mother's Pub & Grill has weekly trivia and karaoke.
  • PunkOuter Games hosts casual and competitive game nights most evenings: Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Warhammer, One Piece and more. Many casual nights are free to join.
  • The Limelight downtown holds a free weekly community improv night, open to adults 18+ with no experience needed.

Food deals near campus

Weeknight food deals come and go, so check them on the day. TONIGHT's UF wall has a Food tab with the deals restaurants are posting, such as wing nights, pasta days and lunch specials, each with the restaurant's own page linked so you can confirm before you go.
